Reply: I used to see mirror resilvering kits for sale, but I haven't seen one for years. Mirror resilvering is a project that's kind of dangerous to your health. The silvering contains mercury.

Our newsletter www.refinishfurniture.com/newsletters/arc2001-02.htm has a little trick in it to make a mirror look good without resilvering.
If you use that method and you need to scrape, be sure to wear a dust mask. protective gloves and eye protection and wipe the scrapings frequently with a damp cloth to be sure to pick up everything. The old silvering is toxic and can be frustrating to try to scrape off, it's stuck tight.
There are solvents to dissolve the old silvering, but they cause toxic fumes.
Usually it's not necessary to remove the old silvering to use the mirror on back method. If some of the silvering is missing from your mirror try holding a small hand mirror against the back of the mirror and see how it looks. If it has black edges around the missing area you can remove the black coating over the silvering with a methylene chloride type stripper. Methylene chloride type is just about any of the older strippers that don't say that they're safe strippers. It should be listed on the container ingredients too.
