Clean Your Patio Furniture

Patio furniture should be cleaned first. This link will take you to the painted patio furniture page which gives information about cleaning your patio and deck furniture.

Apply New Finish Every Year

Refinishing patio furniture is a little different than refinishing dining room furniture, bedroom furniture or any other indoor furniture. It's always a good idea to apply a new coat of clear finish to outdoor furniture every year even if it doesn't look like it needs it. The sun and other weather conditions are very rough on finishes and a finish that looks good in the spring can look not quite as good halfway through summer.

Refinish If Necessary

If the finish is sound and well attached, then it's an ideal surface for recoating. If the finish is cracked, bubbled, worn through to the wood or otherwise damaged, then it should be stripped and refinished, stained if desired, and a new finish applied.

Applying New Finish Over Old

Applying more finish over the old finish should only be done on good, sound, prepared existing finishes, otherwise you'll spend a lot of time and energy only to have the new finish not adhere properly and start peeling. The old finish should be thouroughly cleaned, then lightly sanded all over the whole surface to be recoated, or treated with liquid deglosser.

It's best if you use the same type of finish material each time you recoat, but not absolutely necessary. If you're not sure what the existing finish is, then test with the new finish material by applying it in an inconspicuous place to be sure it won't bubble or have any other adverse effect on the old finish.

Clear Finish Material

Spar varnish spar varnish is a very good exterior finish, as well as my old sandby, lacquer, either brush on brushing lacquer or spray spray lacquer . The spray cans of lacquer are easy to use and make the job a lot quicker and easier.

Refinishing Patio Furniture to the Bare Wood

If you find it necessary to strip your patio furniture it would be a good idea to sand as necessary since anywhere that the old finish may be missing and exposing the bare wood, the wood fibers will probably be kind of rough.

A good finish for patio furniture, starting with bare wood is, seafin sealer Seafin ship n shore wood sealer, a deep penetrating sealer which is resistant to moisture and then coated with spar varnish spar varnish , or with seafin teak oil seafin teak oil. Both spar varnish and the teak oil are moisture resistant making them good for outdoor furniture.

Lacquer is a good finish too. Use a lacquer sanding sealer on the bare wood, then coat with a brushing lacquer brushing lacquer or spray spray lacquer lacquer. Lacquer is water resistant and if you recoat an existing coat of lacquer, it will disolve the top portion of the existing coat and will become one thick coat rather than sitting in layers.
