The virus situation has gotten far beyond rampant. I receive email with attached virus into the dozens each day and larger site owners receive into the hundreds and even thousands and individuals receive many. I'm seeing more recognized and trusted names as senders of virus email every day. The virus email doesn't come from any of those names. (More below)

I even receive virus email from refinishfurniture.com and tomsvariety.com, those are both me and I certainly don't send myself or anyone else a virus.

I've listed several links below to free firewall and free anti virus programs and to a free anti spam email program. The email program is also good for removing viruses while they're still on your ISP's server, so they never get to your computer.

I've listed eTrust anti virus, which is not free, but is the anti virus program that I use and is excellent. When I first started using it, it was free and once it disabled a virus which was sent to me by my ISP. When my ISP checked his servers he discovered 12 instances of the virus. His servers were being protected by Norton AV, which let it slip by, but my freebie caught it, I now pay $9.95 a year. The first year is $19.95, then $9.95 each year after that.

If you already have an anti virus program remember to update the virus information every few days to keep it current. With the present virus situation it's advisable to update daily.

Firewall

A firewall is a program which will catch viruses and lots of other unauthorized information which people try to send to your computer and will stop unauthorized information from being sent from your computer, which will slow the spread of viruses.
